Half Life of Ozone

A physician will want to know if the ozone they are using is at the correct “gamma” or ozone concentration. Time will diminish the strength of the ozone; for example, ozone lasts at full strength in water for as little as 20 minutes.  

The time it takes for ozone concentration to become one half of its original strength is known as “half life.” If I generate ozone at a gamma of 50, after a half life of 20 minutes, the ozone will reduce to 25 gamma.

What Physicians Need to Know

Ozone usually has to be made on site or used within one day, depending on what substance it is concentrated in. At room temperature, ozonated saline or distilled water should be used within 20 minutes, after which time it should be refreshed with more ozone. Cold ozonated water lasts longer, but it is only useful for drinking. Double distilled water is an exception and can have a half life of more than 6 hours.

Gaseous ozone will last all day in an insufflation bag or syringe, but it will lose potency. Always make sure that the vessels used to hold ozone are resistant to it. The half life for ozone gas in a glass container at room temperature is 3 days. However, humidity levels of more than 50% will cut that time down to only 11 hours.

Half life is dependent on the following factors:

  • Whether the ozone is in gas or liquid form
  • The temperature of the surroundings
  • For gas – the humidity, air movement, and reactivity of the container that holds the ozone
  • For liquid – whether the water is distilled, double distilled, or saline

As temperature increases, half life decreases.

According to Russian medical experts the half life for ozone in saline water is about 30 minutes at 68°F.
