What is rectal insufflation ozone therapy and how effective is it?

At a glance:

  • All of us have the potential for developing chronic disease.  When our body is overflowed with stressors, we begin to develop symptoms.
  • Oxygen is one of the most important elements to our life, even more than food or water.  Ozone therapy claims to help oxygenate the body by improving metabolic efficiency.
  • Chronic oxidative stress is widely believed to be a root cause of aging and inflammation.  Scientists believe chronic oxidative stress can be reversed with ozone therapy.
  • An imbalanced immune system can lead to a cadence of issues.  Ozone therapy is claimed to have an immune modulating effect.
  • How does rectal insufflation ozone therapy affect the whole body?  Does it have a negative effect on the gut biome? What does it treat?
  • How do people perform rectal insufflation ozone therapy?

Have you ever had a ceiling leak?
You may have placed a bucket below to catch the drops.
You walk away and leave the bucket, forgetting about it.
Over the next couple hours, that bucket fills up with water and begins to spill all over your floor.
You come back to find the room in disarray because the water has soaked everything and ruined the wood floors.

What a Mess!

Health is similar, we need ways to drain the bucket (our body) so it doesn’t begin to overflow with symptoms of sickness.  If we continue to fill the bucket with poor health choices, environmental toxicity, and stress, it starts to overflow and develop chronic illness.

Due To Environmental Factors, All Of Us Have The Potential For Developing Chronic Disease

The basics of health are the foundation, like diet, exercise, and sleep.  But many scientists believe that ozone therapy may be the medicine of the future, claiming ozone therapy via rectal insufflation, easily done at home, is an effective alternative for chronic disease and preventative care.

If I asked you, “what is the most important element for life?”  You may say, “food” or “water”.

To prove differently, I ask you to hold your breath.  After a few minutes you begin to turn blue and realize your craving for oxygen.  We can go weeks without food, days without water, but only minutes without oxygen.

Otto Warbug won a nobel prize in 1931 for his study of “cell respiration”, in which he states, “Deprive a cell 35% of its oxygen for 48 hours and it may become cancerous.”  Thus, according to Otto Warburg’s nobel winning research, oxygen is vital for the health of our cells and entire body.

Good oxygenation of our body is important because it allows our cells to produce energy, the foundation of our bodies health and wellness.  On the other side, a lack of oxygen nurtures an environment for chronic diseases. Cancer, as an example, grows in an anaerobic state (without oxygen). (1, 2, 3)

What Does Rectal Insufflation Ozone Therapy Do?

Rectal Insufflation Ozone Therapy Oxygenates The Body

The scientific community claims ozone therapy is versatile and causes a “cascade” effect, meaning it will start a domino effect of positive reactions. They claim ozone therapy increases oxygen efficiency and helps your body produce more energy.  (4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

Oxygen efficiency is different from breathing oxygen.  Breathing gets oxygen into the body but oxygen efficiency describes how well oxygen is used.

For example, there are two basketball players, one made 20 baskets in a game, and the other made 18 baskets in a game, who is the better basketball player?

You would probably say, “The player who made 20 baskets!”

What if I told you that the player who made 20 baskets attempted 100?  And the player who made 18 baskets attempted 18?

The player who made the 18 baskets would be better because of his efficiency.

You may shoot the basketball many times at the hoop (oxygen volume), but it’s important how many times the basketball goes in the net (oxygen efficiency).  Ozone therapy claims to help people increase their oxygen efficiency.

In more “sciency” terms, a number of scientific institutions joined together in an overview of ozone.  They state in their paper,

“O3 [ozone] is a stimulator of the transmembrane flow of O2. The increase in O2 levels inside the cell secondary to O3 therapy makes the mitochondrial respiratory chain more efficient.  In red blood cells, O3-AHT may increase the activity of phosphofructokinase, increasing the rate of glycolysis. By enhancing the glycolytic rate, there is an increase in ATP and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) in the cell.”  (9)

AKA, they say ozone therapy is able to increase oxygen efficiency in your cells which improves the body’s ability to create energy.  Many people report an increase in stamina, a reduction in brain fog, and improvement in overall energy, explainable by ozone therapy’s claim to stimulate the body to energy production.

While oxygen keeps us alive and healthy, oxidative stress is broadly viewed as a major cause of aging.  I.e. It is typically thought that we can age slower and stay younger if there was a way to reduce oxidative stress.  (10)

Rectal Insufflation Ozone Therapy Regulates Oxidative Stress

What is oxidative stress?  Well, oxidative stress is said to be, “An imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, which can lead to cell and tissue damage.  Oxidative stress occurs naturally and plays a role in the aging process.” (11)  Poor health choices and environmental factors can accelerate oxidative stress, ultimately leading to chronic inflammation, which is said to be the root of most chronic disease by Harvard Medical.  (12)

If oxidative stress is apart of chronic disease, inflammation, and aging, is there a way to reduce it?

Ozone therapy is versatile and causes what is known as a “cascade” effect, meaning that it will start a domino effect of positive reactions.  According to lead researchers in this field, ozone therapy is able to mediate or reduce oxidative stress, increase oxygen efficiency, improve blood circulation, detoxify the body on a cellular level, and more.  (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

Ozone therapy is interesting because it is an oxidant but is able to help regulate oxidative stress.  A group of scientists, namely Dr. Velio Bocci, wrote something very interesting about ozone therapy and its effect on oxidative stress when they say,

“Severe oxidative stress activates … an inflammatory response and tissue injury … However, moderate oxidative stress activates …. free antioxidants and anti-oxidative enzymes …[which] protect cells from oxidation and inflammation … they may be able to reverse the chronic oxidative stress. Based on these observations, ozone therapy may also activate Nrf2 via moderate oxidative stress, and suppress NFκB and inflammatory responses. Furthermore, activation of Nrf2 results in protection against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Mild immune responses are induced…” (21)

In this short paragraph he is saying two things:

  1. Too much oxidative stress is bad because it causes inflammation, the root of disease, and can make you prone to injury.  As we age or become sick, oxidative stress increases.
  2. The right amount of oxidative stress (like exercise) is good because it stimulates the body to work properly, producing elements that may reverse too much oxidative stress and stimulate an anti-inflammatory response, fighting disease and mediating aging.  Ozone therapy helps the body to find the right amount of oxidative stress.

Does this mean ozone therapy could stop aging?  By no means! Aging is a complex process, dictated by millions of factors.  Dave Asprey, the Father of Biohacking, often says, “Aging is death by a thousand cuts.”  Ozone therapy does not stop aging, but is it possible that ozone therapy could mediate aging and avoid many of those “cuts”?

According to my recent interview with Dr. Minkoff, Dr. Shallenberger did a study of individuals over the course of 15 years.  The first group had regular ozone treatments and the second group did not. They found the group with regular ozone treatments had a much higher likelihood of living through a catastrophic event; car accidents, heart attacks, etc.  (22)

This opens the question, “Is ozone therapy a valuable tool for mediating aging, preventing disease, and decreasing the likelihood of death?”  We don’t have the answer yet, but the evidence indicates ozone’s ability to reduce or mediate oxidative stress, a primary role in aging and disease.

Rectal Insufflation Ozone Therapy Modulates the Immune System

A healthy immune system is able to fight disease better than any drug.

In addition to reducing oxidative stress and increasing oxygen efficiency, ozone therapy is said to modulate the immune system, not necessarily “immune boosting”.  Immune modulation is the ability of the body to regulate and bring the body into homeostasis, a state of equilibrium. If the immune system is overactive, like autoimmune diseases, ozone may quiet it down.  If the immune system is underperforming, like infectious diseases, ozone may boost the immune system. (23, 24, 25, 26, 27)

Ozone allows the body to balance its own immune system, a form of auto correction.

Dr. Robert Rowen demonstrated an impressive case study on a severe autoimmune disease, dermatomyositis.  The patient received high doses of prednisone and other immune suppressing drugs, but nothing helped. By removing an oral infection and regular ozone therapy, Dr. Rowen claimed to reverse the symptoms and bring the immune system into balance (pictured below).  (28)

In addition to this case study, Dr. Rowen posted 23 video logs documenting success with ozone therapy for autoimmune issues.  (29)

Rectal Insufflation Ozone Therapy Improves Blood Flow

Ozone therapy is claimed to improve rheology of the blood, an important aspect of bringing nutritional elements to our cells and eliminating byproducts. (30, 31, 32)

Healthy blood cells are able to fold, so they can fit into small veins.  Blood should flow freely and avoid clotting together into clumps. Imagine the difference between water and molasses.  Water is much more quick, fluid, and moldable, molasses is slow, thick, and sticky. Sometimes, our blood can become thick, slow, and sticky.

Blood rheology is a larger problem than many think, contributing to:

  • Inflammation
  • Circulatory Issues
  • Malnourishment to organs and tissues
  • Chronic disease

Blood rheology is not exactly known, does it contribute to the problems or do the problems create the poor rheology?  This is the classic “chicken or egg” question. However, we do know, proper blood flow is a good thing and sets the foundation for the body to repair itself.  (34)

Dr. Bocci remarks on ozone’s ability to improve blood flow, saying,

“Recently important studies, analysed with modern techniques, have appeared clearly indicating that ozone therapy can produce a significant improvement in blood flow and oxygenation in ischaemic tissues: it appears that the more poorly oxygenated muscles benefited most from the therapy even though this result had been achieved after only two … ozonated AHT and detected an improvement of haemorheological parameters and an increased oxygen delivery to ischaemic tissues. Two papers by a Polish group have shown, in comparison to an oxygen-control group, the clinical efficacy of ozonated AHT in haemodialyzed patients with intermittent claudication, without any side effects (Tylicki et al., 2001; 2003; 2004; Biedunkiewicz et al., 2004). These results fully confirm the postulation that ozone, via ROS and LOPs, activates several biochemical pathways increasing the vascular flow in the ischaemic areas. Besides the vasodilation due to S-nitrosothiols and the enhanced oxygen delivery, release of growth factors (PDGF, TGF-beta and VEGF) from activated platelets greatly influences tissue regeneration.” (35)

As said by Dr. Bocci, ozone therapy is able to increase oxygenation to needed tissues because of its ability to improve the “haemorheological parameters”, the blood’s ability to flow without restriction.

Furthermore, an interesting study revealed that intravenous (into the vein) ozone isn’t necessary because rectal insufflation is capable of improving blood flow.  (36)  This study, among others, was able to demonstrate the effects of rectal ozone insufflation on the blood flow.

“…these gases affect some fundamental hemorheologic parameters when given by insufflation. … Our study showed an improvement in deformability, a decrease in aggregation and an increase in fragility … Therefore, more than two weeks ozone insufflation may induce adaptation to changes induced by ozone suggesting its systemic effects.”

Another advantage to improved blood rheology is improved nutrient exchange in the cells, which may lead to an improvement in the removal of undesired byproduct, A.K.A. detox.

How Could Ozone Gas Insufflated Into The Colon Possibly Benefit The Entire Body?

Interestingly, scientists were able to examine increased oxygen content up to 230% in rabbits after rectal insufflation.  How could ozone into the gut do this?

Essentially, Dr. Bocci elaborated that ozone goes into the gut and quickly transforms into other properties.  Ozone does not react with the gut wall, rather it reacts with water and proteins, which creates a domino effect of beneficial reactions.  From there, the oxygen and ozone reactants are absorbed into the gut wall and into the bloodstream. All this happens almost immediately.  (37)

What Is The Current State Of Ozone Therapy?

Is Ozone Therapy Safe?

Ozone therapy is considered an alternative therapy with no FDA approval, contrary to its worldwide use and accepted practice in Europe.  Despite a lack of FDA approval, ozone therapy is a rapidly growing treatment in the United States, with approximately 4,000 doctors using it on a weekly basis.

The FDA takes a strong stance when they say, “Ozone is a toxic gas with no known useful medical application.”  (38)  However, the FDA approved a company (Vasogen) to phase III FDA trials with ozone therapy.  (39, 40, 41, 42)  According to FDA standards, Vasogen had to prove to the FDA that ozone therapy was safe before they could move to phase II.  (43)  In phase II they have to prove efficacy and side effects.  Again, the FDA pushed ozone therapy to stage III, meaning they were approved in phases I and II.

Albeit, these FDA trials were for a specific form of ozone therapy called minor autohemotherapy where they mixed the blood with ozone and injected it back into the patient.  So this was not a blanket trial for ozone therapy but focused on one particular modality.

Nonetheless, their formal statement about the toxicities of ozone therapy take precedence.

I covered ozone therapy safety in another article, you can click here to read all the details on ozone therapy safety.

Ozone’s Effect On The Microbiome

Inside our gut is a diverse ecosystem of bacteria that help us to live.  We need them and they need us. Its a good relationship we have with these bacteria, which is why a lot of people take probiotics, to increase the amount of beneficial bacteria in the gut.  Dr. Zach Bush estimates that we need about 30,000 bacterial species in our gut to maintain good health.  (44)

Numerous studies are being published about the importance of the gut and microbiome, even calling our gut the “second brain” because of its effect on the body.

Naturally, people want to ensure the rectal ozone insufflation isn’t damaging the valuable gut biome.  Dysmicrobism, an abnormal variation of healthy gut bacteria, has deleterious consequences which may contribute to chronic disease.

How could rectal insufflation not harm the microbiome?

Dr. Bocci, the Father of Ozone Therapy and researcher, stated in his book,

“Whether Rectal Insufflation with a daily input of oxygen-ozone can re-equilibrate the bacterial flora and lead to normal immunoreactivity remains to be demonstrated (and explained), although anecdotal results suggest a beneficial effect.”

Dr. Bocci suggests that ozone actually stimulates a beneficial effect on the biome.  This may be explained by the mechanism of action suggested previously, a small dose of ozone administered via rectal insufflation is absorbed into the gut wall and does not travel up the colon.  The rest of the gas is expelled or inconsequential.

One interesting study involved 34 participants who had dysbiosis, an imbalance of the microbiome in the gut.  They used rectal ozone therapy to treat these patients over 90 days and found significant improvements in all of the patients with dysbiosis.  (45, 46)

This study may serve as a clinical indication of Dr. Bocci’s comment, that rectal ozone therapy has an equilibrium effect on the microbiome and does not cause harm.

In addition, many doctors claim they have not witnessed complications with long term use of rectal ozone and the gut biome.

At this time, it seems more research is needed in this area.  In theory, it’s possible that the small dose of ozone actually produces a beneficial effect to the microbiome.  Based on Dr. Bocci’s observation, it doesn’t seem to cause a negative effect.

Ozone Patient Testimonies

Dr. Robert Rowen has a YouTube channel with over 460 videos dedicated to patient testimonials.  You can click here to see testimonies ranging from cancer, lyme, autoimmune, infections, arthritis, carpal tunnel, and more.

Here is one particularly interesting testimonial where Amber describes her experience with ozone therapy for a stroke.  She was unable to talk after the stroke. According to her, after two months the doctors thought she had been healing for two years.

“I had a stroke 16 months ago… My vocabulary, writing, reading, math problems, and the entire right side of my was paralized… I’ve been doing ozone treatments… it has made a huge difference… after about two months, we went to a clinic in California and did a spec scan.  They said that I was showing signs of having had a stroke 2 – 3 years before instead of 2 months before…. When I do ozone, my vocabulary comes back.” – Amber W.

“The Simply O3 machine has helped heal and cleanse my gut from IBS and yeast overgrowth symptoms like nothing else I’ve encountered. I’m grateful for the travel size machine as it has enabled me to travel to Europe this summer, which would not be possible without my ozone treatments!” – Dean S.

“After over 8 years, I am finally feeling Terrific!! Both, the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic said there was nothing wrong. I knew there was…Finally being diagnosed with Lyme and treated with ozone therapy has been a true Blessing! … It’s been a miracle! A gift to have renewed life again!” – Joanna

Dozens of websites are laden with ozone therapy testimonials, they are easy to find online.

Keep in mind, ozone fundamentally supports the body to work better.  This is why advocates claim ozone therapy works for so many ailments.  This list is not complete, according to anecdotes and clinical experiences found online.

Here is a more complete list with clinical whitepapers, overviews, and studies.

It has been said, ozone cures nothing but treats many things.

Ozone stimulates and enhances your body’s natural mechanisms. Ozone is not a drug that forces something to happen inside your body. Drugs and medications, while sometimes necessary, don’t always address the issue that goes deeper than the symptoms.

Your body has the mechanism and capability to heal.  With ozone, we want to engage these mechanisms that already exist inside your body and allow them to work properly.  A healthy body will more effectively fight disease than any drug.

Contraindications, Instances To Avoid Ozone Therapy

The world federation of ozone therapy produced a paper, clearly laying out a few instances to avoid ozone therapy. (48)

  1. Patients with a significant deficiency of G-6PD, a genetic disorders that accentuates the breakdown of red blood cells.
  2. Pregnancy
  3. Blood coagulation issues, anemia
  4. Serious cardio-vascular instability

They go on to say, ozone therapy, when used judiciously and correctly, is significantly unlikely to cause complications or issues.

Common Protocols

To Get Started, You Will Need:

Medical Ozone Generator

There are a few things to clarify about ozone generators.

First, there are differences between medical ozone generators and generators for air or water purification.  Medical ozone generators have a specific technology that allows them to create controlled concentrations of ozone from a tank of pure oxygen.  They have all ozone compatible materials so that nothing breaks down.

So the question is, how do I know what is ozone resistant?

Well, I wanted to provide a couple 3rd party websites so you can validate the resistance of these materials:

There are multiple materials that are ozone resistant, so don’t be swayed into buying a more expensive ozone generator because it uses all quartz glass.  They often use fear based tactics and construct a convincing narrative to get you to overpay. There are laboratory grade generators using 316 Stainless Steel or Medical Grade Titanium to produce 100% pure ozone/oxygen mixtures.

However, you still need to be wary of cheap ozone generators (under $500).  They do not have the quality control and assurances that most companies would.  Often times, a cheap company or manufacturer will say it is ozone resistant but then use cheaper components to keep the price low.

If you want to know about buying an ozone generator, click here.  We will get you some helpful information. There are a few companies you can choose from.

Oxygen Tank

There are two different tanks in the USA.

  1. 870 Medical oxygen tanks, requires a prescription from a doctor.  To locate facilities that carry 870 medical tanks, Google in your area, “Medical Oxygen Supply”
  2. 540 Industrial oxygen tanks.  These may be acquired at welding supply, Airgas, or Praxair.  These are in every town. Just Google in your area, “Industrial Oxygen Supplier”, “Praxair”, “Airgas”, or “Welding Supply”

A prescription is first required for an 870 Medical Oxygen Tank.  People typically request a size between 20-40 cu/ft, about 5”x18” in dimensions.

People typically choose the 540 Industrial Oxygen Tank because it does not require a prescription from a doctor.  You can find these at companies such as AirGas or Praxair.  Simply request a new tank between 20-40 cu/ft, size R. They will refuse to serve you if you are using it for a medical purpose.

Oxygen Tank Regulator

These fit onto the oxygen tank and control the flow of gas.

3-Chambered Ozone Bag

The 3-Chambered Ozone Bag is a reusable bag for capturing the ozone gas from the ozone generator.  This bag can be filled with ozone at 200, 400, or 750mL and is typically found at the same company you purchase the ozone generator from.

Catheter

These catheters typically have a luer lock fitting to connect to the bag.  They are small in diameter, about half the size of a pencil. Catheters can be found at the same company you purchase the ozone generator from.

Administration

Again, to see full instructions you can watch the video or download the PDF.

Essentially, the oxygen tank is turned on and the flow is set to ¼ liter per minute (LPM).  The oxygen flows from the tank into the ozone generator and is converted to a gaseous mixture of ozone/oxygen.  The gas is then captured by the bag attached to the machine. The bag is then removed and attached to the catheter.  The individual can get into a position, whichever is most comfortable for them, insert the catheter three inches and role the bag down to expel the gas.

That’s it!

The whole process takes a couple of minutes.  Typically people will have to go to the bathroom right afterwards, which doctors claim is fine because the ozone gas reacts within a few seconds and has already begun its effect.

It’s an incredible idea, a simple, inexpensive therapy done at home may have many positive effects.

Diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and human connection are five fundamental aspects of health.  According to many scientists, ozone therapy may be an effective alternative for chronic disease and preventative care, allowing easy administration via rectal insufflation.

All of us have the potential for developing a disease.  We are bombarded with environmental factors and they are impossible to avoid altogether.  Equip your toolbelt with natural ways to empty the bucket out.
