You may have heard about ozone. The ozone layer up above protects us from the sun, and ground level ozone is caused by pollution.
This seemingly simple molecule, is one of the most misunderstood and mis-contextualized molecules in existence. It accounts as a paradox within the great expanse of molecules!
Is it dangerous or is it healthy? Is it a pollutant or is it a disinfectant? Is it unstable or predictable?
It harnesses all of these capabilities in different environments.
Ozone’s basic properties allow for a dynamic range of uses in many different industries. It can destroy bacteria and viruses to create safe drinking water, eradicate mold in a house, prevent a gangrenous leg from being amputated (1), or be injected to treat herniated discs. (2)
Each industry adds different pieces to the puzzle, which in turn, only adds more questions and less answers! People often read information from one industry and apply it to all the others.
Ozone water for medical purposes is commonly used for the following:
In this article, we will be discussing drinking ozone water for medicinal purposes: the proposed benefits, side effects, and how it’s done.
I know this is a very controversial topic, but my intentions are to lay out the information that exists, and allow people to make their own informed decisions. Please feel free to present me with good scientific information that contradicts my statements. (email@example.com)
(I would also like to encourage these organizations to produce more data on drinking ozone water, either good or bad: International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy, The World Federation of Ozone Therapy, the University of Sienna, the Journal of Ozone Therapy, and the Spanish Association of Medical Professionals in Ozone Therapy.)
Drinking ozonated water is not an easy subject to nail down because there is very little scientific evidence for its effectiveness, which is different from blood or rectal treatments with ozone.
Ozonated water for the washing of wounds and dental purposes has significant scientific research, dating back to WWI, but the drinking of ozone water is almost ignored by most scientific ozone organizations. People seem to assume it's due to its unknown complexities.
This doesn’t mean that drinking ozone water has no benefit. It means that we don’t know exactly how or if it works. Most ozone doctors claim that ozone water is safe to drink.
The majority of people drinking ozone water do it for one of these reasons:
OZONE IS A GAS COMPOSED OF THREE OXYGEN ATOMS (O3), A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP TO OXYGEN (O2). DIFFERENT FROM OXYGEN, OZONE IS EXTREMELY UNSTABLE BECAUSE THAT EXTRA OXYGEN ATOM WANTS TO BREAK OFF AND COMBINE WITH OTHER MOLECULES, KNOWN AS OXIDATION.
Making ozone water involves infusing ozone gas into water. Ozone gas is bubbled through the water and slowly dissolves until the water retains a reasonable concentration of ozone that can be used for drinking. (9)
Bottling and saving ozone water for long periods of time is not possible because the ozone reverts back to oxygen. In most circumstances, the strength of the ozone will be reduced by 50% every 30 minutes. Some measures can be taken to make ozone water last longer.
Ozonated water for medical drinking purposes is different from ozonating water for purification. Purifying water only requires a small amount of ozone and can be done with a common, inexpensive ozone generator.
Ozonation of water for medical purposes involves a highly pure, medical grade ozone generator that uses an oxygen tank. This creates a much higher concentration of ozone water.
It generally seems to range between four ounces and up to 60 ounces of ozonated water per day. The strength and frequency also have largely varied ranges.
Speculating, on the lack of complaints and commentary, doctors claim it is relatively safe. Otherwise, they say, there would be more information on people with adverse effects, considering that thousands of people do it everyday.
A common recommendation found on forums is to start with a lower amount of ozone water and see how you tolerate it, up to one glass per day.
We created a video that walks through making ozone water. You can watch it here.
This article was less definitive than others because the jury is still out on drinking ozone water. We clearly understand its benefits for wounds and dental applications, but drinking ozone water is largely unknown.
If you take one thing away from this article, it’s this: drinking ozone water has a multitude of anecdotal testimonies touting benefits for digestion, infections, and inflammation, but the scientific community has not produced enough research yet to take a definitive stance.

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
